Yesterday Unicef published the report "A Familiar Face: Violence in the lives of children and adolescents," based on the most up-to-date available data, to draw attention to four forms of violence suffered by children and adolescents: violent discipline and domestic violence; violence at school; violent deaths among adolescents; and sexual violence.

With regard to the latter, the report reveals that “in 38 low- and middle-income countries, close to 17 million adult women report having experienced forced sex in childhood.” In Europe alone, approximately 2.5 million young women in 28 countries were victims of "contact and non-contact forms of sexual violence before age 15." The data further indicates that only 1% of female adolescent victims of forced sex have sought professional help. According to the statistics in five countries, the most commonly reported perpetrators of sexual violence against adolescent boys were from the boys' circle of friends, classmates and partners.
