Alumna awarded for her safeguarding book
We're pleased to share alumna Hawlin Jong's news about her book on safeguarding.
In 2016, the Fu-Jen Faculty of Theology of St. Robert Bellarmine, where I was an assistant professor, sent me to Rome to study for the Diploma in Safeguarding Minors. After graduating from this program, I went back to Taiwan and wrote a book in Chinese named Safeguarding Minors – Child Protection, Abuse Prevention, and Treatment. This book addresses three main themes:
- The problem of child sexual abuse in both the secular world and the Catholic Church;
- How to protect children and how to interview and treat victims and perpetrators;
- How to help more members of the clergy and of religious communities to understand the importance of protecting children from being abused.
This book was published in Taiwan during the pandemic in September 2020. It serves as a textbook for the child protection course in the Fu Jen Faculty of Theology of St. Robert Bellarmine. Fr. John Lee SJ, who is also an alumnus of the diploma program (2017), has been using this book to hold child protection workshops in Taiwan. On 21 March 2022, the book won the best theology application award from the Pastor Zhou Lianhua Foundation. I hope this work may help Chinese society become more aware of the need to protect children from being abused.
