The European Commission presented last May the first report on the progress in the fight against trafficking in human beings. The report finds that trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation is the most extended one affecting 67% of he registered victims, being a high percentage women and girls.

15% of the total victims registered under the different forms of human trafficking are children, who are especially vulnerable and targeted by criminal groups. The report warns about the increasing number of non-accompanied children forced to sexual exploitation and criminality in the current migratory context. Based on different data, it also highlights the risk of secondary victimisation when considered not as victims, but as perpetrators of a crime.

The document also presents that the actual number of victims is probably higher, as not all cases are registered in the data collected by the EU Member States.
