The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council in their research report 2014 regarding new directions in child abuse and neglect research argued that children raised in families with multiple risk factors are at considerably higher risk for sexual abuse and other forms of abuse and neglect than children not raised in such families. However, “the complex interaction of multiple risk factors is not clearly understood, especially in conjunction with protective factors and resilience, nor is it understood with respect to how children from different backgrounds in terms of culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, immigrant status, or geographic region of a country are at risk for child abuse and neglect".
